Company Top Performers In The U.S. Plan To Quit Their Jobs - Learn Why

August 19th, 2010

Here is a list of reasons U.S. professionals cited for wanting to quit their jobs this year, accompanied by the percentage of respondents who cited the reason:

  • Lack of communication and involvement by top management, 40 percent
  • Lack of promotion despite good work results, 37 percent
  • Overwork, 34 percent
  • Lack of company “vision,” 31 percent
  • Lack of belief in colleagues’ competence, 28 percent
  • Lack of administrative support, 26 percent
  • Rude colleagues, 21 percent
  • Boss takes credit for their work, 20 percent

The Regus survey — conducted by MarketingUK, which interviewed more than 15,000 business respondents in February and March — also asked about perks that would prompt workers to stay with their current employers. Apart from pay raises, 41 percent said private medical insurance and 34 percent cited a 2.5 percent pension increase.

Research done last November indicated that stress was increasing.

      “higher” or “much higher”.
    - 39 percent of workers are stressed by increased focus on profitability.
    - 38 percent of employees indentified the risk of unemployment as a
      reason for increased stress.
    - 71 percent of workers in larger companies (more than 1,000 employees)

Jump and Slide - Emergency Exit Chute for Disgruntled Employees

August 11th, 2010

Snap!Steven Slater is now a celebrity for opening the exit door and escaping from the tin tube of an airplane.  This serves as a wake up call for all companies - do you know what your employees are truly dealing with on the front lines everyday? Jet Blue is certainly having a quick wake up to the realities and the front line of a media frenzy.

As a 12 year veteran of the travel industry I can sense the frustration of Steven Slater in dealing with a rude public that is allowed to go into tight cramped quarters all for the purchase price of a low fare admission ticket. Many people that go out in public react less than politely in different environments. This passenger was not a happy camper and took their frustration out on the employee with a huge audience now learning what a jackass they were for treating another human being with little respect.

The job of flight attendant is one that I did for a brief stint at Apple Vacations working for a charter airline.  The job is more about safety and emergency preparedness.  I am sure as he looked out the window by the emergency door he was able to deploy the chute quickly with no likelihood of injury to any crew on the ground. Most people do not know this, but any passenger that interferes with a flight operation can receive federal charges and a hefty legal bill.  The two arguing over the flight bin at the front end of this horrible flight from hell should have both been removed from the plane and charged.  However no airline wants the Tweet backlash and time delays for their equipment. PUT UP and shut up is most likely the message to all employees. Where and when will the line be drawn?

This Steven Cobert video is a humourous reminder of the seriousness of the bigger issue here. People are stressed, employees are stressed and many corporations are sitting on record breaking profits after letting go of workers to increase their bottom line. The ones that are still employed are getting squeezed with time, requests for increased productivity and less and less financial incentives.

Seventy percent (70%) of our economy is generated by consumer spending; without jobs and with prolonged financial uncertainty, no one seems comfortable with discretionary spending. While you may or may not agree with material acquistion as a goal, it has a direct impact on all of us.

A so called expert in another interview I watched felt that anyone perceived as a disgruntled employee should be reported to management…so we avoid similar or worse situations. Harrassment, bullying and shootings are all 20/20 in hindsight after the fact post-snap. But don’t most corporate cultures allow these situations to be magnified (perhaps unconsciously) with loads of stress being added to an already quite volatile cocktail of human emotions?

Food for thought to HR, OD and leaders in management: get your employees stress reducing strategies NOW and REDUCE the stress where and when you can.

I have a solution that innovative, forward thinking companies are installing with a clearly proven track record of success in reducing stress and increasing life management /work balance skills.

Talent Management: Is It Your Top Priority?

July 27th, 2010

There are many indications that our economy is slowly and cautiously turning the corner. Senior Leaders are focused on hiring and developing talent. Employers are preparing themselves for growth opportunities as the economy rebounds and are looking for ways to enhance performance and productivity.

PRWeb published the results of a survey of more than 450 Senior Executives on LinkedIn by Right Management and I want to share their finding with my readers. It was not a huge surprise to me; but, 94% of executives indicated that talent management is their top priority in 2010. This information is based on the fact that the economy is cautiously turning the corner, and we hope that this trend continues.

This news is not only great for individuals’ looking for jobs; but it is also great news for employers looking for opportunities for growth as our economy is rebuilding and they are looking for different ways to enhance current production projections and performance of their existing staff members and themselves. Additionally, one-third of the senior executives that responded to the survey indicated they would hiring new talent in 2010, while 36 percent will focus on developing current talent. Twenty percent reported that increasing employee engagement is a top priority.

Leaders in Finance functions are the most focused (44 percent) on developing current talent, followed by Information Technology executives (36 percent). Skills gaps were acknowledged by Business Development executives, as well as Operations and Information Technology leaders, who will all be mostly focused on hiring new talent next year.

Sharing a quote from George Hermann of Right Management’s Group, “Whether hiring or developing, we anticipate there will be heightened efforts for employers to assess the competencies needed to be successful in 2010 and beyond. Businesses and governments will continue to demand highly specialized skills and behaviors. The pressure to find the right skills in the right place at the right time will increase as the working age population declines, the economy rebounds and the nature of work shifts.”

The LinkedIn survey of 461 senior executives was conducted during the last quarter of 2009 in the United States, Canada and Latin America.
